From Muridke to the World: How
Iqbal Masih’s Legacy Inspires the Future of Education Access
In 1986, a four-year-old boy named Iqbal Masih was sold into bonded labor for a tiny loan. For the next six years of his life, he was chained to a carpet loom in Muridke, working long, agonizing hours in the dark. The constant dust ruined his lungs, and the lack of food stunted his growth. By the time he was ten, he looked like a child half his age, but his mind possessed a rare, brilliant maturity.
He looked at his reality and chose clarity over fear. He realized that the system keeping him and thousands of other children in bondage was entirely wrong. Armed with that clarity, he made a daring escape, joined the Bonded Labour Liberation Front, and began speaking out.
Instead of staying silent, Iqbal found his voice. He traveled across the country and the world, helping set over three thousand children free. He spoke with unmistakable focus, telling everyone that children should hold pens, not tools of slavery. He chose a clear, uncompromising path: everyone has a fundamental right to a free life and an education.
A Voice Cut Short
Iqbal’s courage made him deeply dangerous to the powerful forces exploiting children. On Easter Sunday, April 16, 1995, while visiting relatives in his village, twelve-year-old Iqbal Masih was shot and killed.
He was just a child, yet he was assassinated because he refused to let a broken, corrupt system dictate the lives of the next generation. Though his life was cut tragically short, his message survived. He proved that when you choose clarity, stand up against a complicated web of exploitation, and point out a direct path to freedom, you can change history.
